In probably one of the best news heard by the shipping and freight industry in a while, Admiral Osama Rabie, Chairman and Managing Director of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), has announced today, Monday 29th March, 2021, that the Ever Given has been freed and successfully refloated..
As per the SCA “This was the result of successful push and tow maneuvers which led to the restoration of 80% of the vessel’s direction; with the stern 102 m. away from the bank of the Canal now instead of 4 m. prior to the refloating.”
The SCA site is further advising that maneuvers are set to be resumed during high tide at 11:30 am as it shall reach 2m allowing for the full restoration of the vessel’s direction so it is positioned in the middle of the navigable waterway.
The SCA has reassured the international community that navigation of the canal shall be resumed immediately upon the complete restoration of the vessel’s direction and moving it to the Bitter Lakes waiting area for technical inspection before it resumes its voyage.
In a Facebook post the Chairman commended the efforts of the SCA workers who achieved this heroic feat saying that “they have done their patriotic duty impeccably and that in all certainty work will be complete very soon.”
The Ever Given, a 400m long container ship owned by Japanese owners Shoei Kisen Kaisha, operated by Taiwanese shipping line Evergreen Marine, managed technically by German’s Bernard Schulte, registered in Panama, crewed by Indians and insured by UK P&I Club, has been wedged diagonally across the 225m canal from the 23rd of March 2021.
So it seems all is well that ends well although the potential backlog to clear the almost 360+ ships waiting to transit the canal could take a week to 10 days.
How the European ports will fare with the sudden influx of so many vessels remains to be seen and whether there will be port congestion and other issues that follows.
